5/5/2020 0 Comments Hamilton the Musical EssaysHamilton the Musical EssaysThe two best Hamilton the Musical essays are coming from my friends, Tiffany Tatum and Yolanda Ray. Tiffany has an interesting and insightful piece titled 'Hamilton Meets Sir Aaron Burr,' while Yolanda has an interesting piece titled 'The Musical Theater at Its Best.' Both are worth reading, but I love Tiffany's idea more because she brings a lot of insight to it.
Tiffany Tatum starts off her Hamilton essay by discussing how Hamilton originally intended to write his biography based around Hamilton's childhood, but the movie made the character out to be a bad actor. The piece then moves on to discuss how Hamilton and Burr interacted before they both took on roles on stage. This makes for an interesting debate, as it pits the good vs. evil Hamilton (Bryan Cranston) and the evil Burr (Thomas Jefferson). Tiffany Tatum then moves on to discuss how Hamilton changed Hamilton's life by becoming more successful than he was at first. Hamilton has a lot of influence over Burr, as he didn't know he was being played by Aaron Burr. He thought it was just the cast and crew that were playing him, so Hamilton challenged him to a duel and asked him to step down as President. Tatum describes how Burr couldn't accept this challenge and was still the Vice President of the United States when Hamilton died. She also describes the fallout after Hamilton's death and how it led to his brother's assassination. This is a very good Hamilton essay and I really liked Tiffany's ideas on how Hamilton affected everyone else in the cast and crew. Yolanda Ray's Hamilton essay is very similar to Tatum's, but she goes into more detail about how Hamilton's memoir 'Alexander Hamilton' turned into a song. This came from Hamilton wanting to be a great writer, and also because of Alexander's penchant for writing. It helped him with his writing because he could express himself much better with words than with music. After describing all of the characters that were affected by Hamilton's 'Hamiltonic Accomplishments,' Yolanda mentions how Hamilton was a lover of literature and was always looking for new authors to read. Hamilton gave directions to his workers about how he wanted their work to sound. They worked on his instructions and then wrote their own song to showcase his talent. Yolanda Ray's Hamilton essay focuses on how Hamilton lived a luxurious life and then went back to working on his memoirs, which included spending time with his son (who died in infancy). Hamilton seemed to be a very busy man who had a lot of things going on in his life, but was also quite devoted to his family. Yolanda also notes that Hamilton struggled to make a living after his parents died, but his son helped him to achieve financial stability. I enjoyed all of these Hamilton essay topics and recommend them all to any student who is interested in learning more about Hamilton. I've included links below to read the essays for yourself.
